New technologies and new uses of materials in the production of faucets and related components.
To celebrate SOSITALIA’s 25 years of business, SOSITALIA SRL launches the ÈA BONA Project – (Acqua Buona/Good Water) in order to contribute towards the arising problems from national and international institutions concerning updated regulations on drinking water and environment protection.
“ÈA BONA” means GOOD WATER in the Sardinian Galluerese dialect, synonymous with spring water and therefore pure, natural water. Gallura, Sardinia is the place of origin of Giovanni Pitturru, owner of SOSITALIA.
The introduction of increasingly stringent norms in the use of some materials commonly used in the production of faucets and its components (lead, nickel, chromium), require significant changes to sanitary fittings manufacturers in the field of Public Health and Environment protection.
SOSITALIA with the startup of the “ÉA BONA” (GOOD WATER) project wants to give its own contribution to the sanitary fittings industry to address the problems introduced by these regulations through new technologies and new uses of materials that are more sustainable for the environment and more suitable and healthy in the human consumption of drinking water.
Here are the proposals of our company:
1) METAL 3D PRINTING WITH 316L/1.4404 STEEL POWDERS:
For 4 years SOSITALIA has started a course of study and research on this type of technology to be applied to the sanitary fittings industry. The research and knowledge of machinery and materials, participation in the most advanced world conferences, the learning of new design techniques and the realization of some samples / concepts, have characterized the first phase of this project. Another fundamental step of this project was signing the collaboration agreement 2 years ago with the Department of Mechanical Engineering from the POLITECNICO DI MILANO.
Thanks to this collaboration, all the problems of planning and design, printing, post processing (namely mechanical processing, polishing and surface treatments) and the engineering of the product, were addressed in order to make it functional and available for industrialization and production.
At the ISH 2019 exhibition, the result of these last 4 years of work on the 3D ADDITIVE METAL PRINTING project will therefore be presented as a 100% Made in Italy proposal.
2) PRODUCTION OF FAUCETS AND COMPONENTS THROUGH PRECISION CASTING IN STEEL 316L / 1.4404
New production boundaries are opening with this technology. Stainless steel 316L/1.4404 has no intolerable migration of alloying constituents like lead, nickel, chromium etc hence all the requirements of International Standards concerning drinking water for human consumption are met. Furthermore, by means of mirror polishing, a finish similar to chrome plating can be obtained without using nickel and chrome. Moreover it is possible to obtain excellent finishes by painting and PVD.
3) PRODUCTION OF ZAMAK FAUCETS AND COMPONENTS
The technical evolution in the field of the sanitary fittings components production for zamak faucets has recently undergone a remarkable development that has brought very interesting results. The production of faucet bodies, even with complex shapes, together with the use of internal components in copper and steel to avoid contact between zamak and water, allow a lower use of raw material and a considerable saving in the various production processes and on the final production cost compared to the currently most used production system, that is, the one that uses brass. In addition, all the requirements of international drinking water standards for human consumption are met.
The finishes proposed are an alternative to galvanic treatments, nickel plating and chrome plating, which despite being traditionally used in the production of faucets, are now subject to strict regulations. They are steel MIRROR POLISHING, PAINTING and PVD. We also offer the PVD/DLC filtered PVD process (Diamond-Like-Carbon) never used previously in the faucet sector that guarantees hardness properties (about 5.300HV), and corrosion resistance even under particular conditions of use, such as highly saline environments, environments close to the sea, naval applications and laboratories.
